Crust

“Crust” (Japanese title is “Ebi Boxer”) is a movie in the comedy genre. The film was directed by Mark Rock with Kevin R. McNally in the leading role. The movie was released in 2002.

Bill, a former boxer who is 43 years old man and who becomes an alcoholic is the owner of a pub on the outskirts of town now. He continued living a bad life. One day, He  was approached with a strange business plan using Mantis shrimp by a friend. The plan is about trying to make money in who human versus shrimp boxing. Moreover, they had found a huge shrimp more than 2m. Kevin who dreams of getting rich quick, jumps at his friend’s plan. He names the shrimp Mr.C and teaches him boxing.

 
This movie is very cheap. The shrimp is not CG. It’s a full-body suit. The shrimp is bounded to string, but the strength of the shrimp is real. The shrimp knocked out other boxers in a moment. It is very strong. But I think this is not a shrimp, but a squilla.

This movie is  a comedy and a ridiculous story, but  the movie is surprisingly able to impress. Opening this movie, he used shrimp as a tool for making money, but as the story progresses, a friendship sprouts between him and  the shrimp. Its appearance is quite surreal.

This is my first time to see a shrimp movie, and I think I will never see shrimp movie again.

Human Race

“Human Race” is a movie in the action genre. The film was directed by Paul Huf, with Paul McCarthy Boynton in the leading role. The movie was released in 2014.

 
Suddenly 80 young and old people wake in an unknown room. They hear the mysterious message which sounds in their head, “Race or die only one may win. If you are late in your lap twice, you will die. If you don’t stay on the path of your course, you will die. The race suddenly starts, but a man who can’t understand the rules was off the course, and his head explodes. The people understand that they must run to survive.

This movie is a very tense story, because this race has the rule “If you are late in your lap twice, you will die”. So even if everybody cooperates and runs, there is a person run selfish, everybody will die. So the movie succeed making a special tense.
 

And in the movie, it is great how they show the psychological desperation. At the opening at this movie, everybody runs without understanding anything. But gradually a person takes a crazy action. It is a great plot, and the direction becomes uncomfortable. But this is a good point in this movie.

 

I think this movie is great and I recommend to see it. But it is a movie which causes people to like or dislike it. This is a good B-movie.

Legendary: Tomb of the Dragon

“Legendary: Tomb of the Dragon” (Japanese title is “Lake Monster”) might seem like a movie in the monster panic genre, but actually you will be surprised when you see this movie. The film was directed by Eric Stiles, with Dolph Lundgren and Scott Adkins in the leading role. The movie was released in 2013.

A zoologist, Travis (Scott Adkins), was asked to investigate a major construction enterprise. At a building site near a lake, workers were attacked by a big creature. The big creature was 6 meters at full length. And the fight between him and the big creature starts.

Dolph Lundgren and Scott Adkins are very famous actors. They have appeared in many popular action movies such as "The Expendables" series. But there are no flashy action scenes in this movie. According to this picture, we may think they are partners., but  it’s a mistake. They are enemies. It is in the adventure genre after all, not the monster panic genre. I think that you can understand the reason if you watch this movie.

When it's seen as an adventure movie, this movie is a very good movie. If a seqvel of this movie comes out, I'd like to see it.

Deep Rising

“Deep Rising” (Japanese title is “The Greed”) is a movie in the monster panic genre. The film was directed by Stephen Sommers, and starrs Famke Janssen in the leading role. The movie was released in 1998.

A luxury cruise ship was sailing in the South China Sea with 3,000 people. Then the ship was attacked by an armed group whose purpose was obscure. But there were no passengers on the ship.  The survivors were only the ship's owner, the captain of the ship and a woman.

In the movie, it is great how they show the monster. The monster doesn't appear in the opening of this movie. It appears with an indirect expression. For example, an iron wall becomes hollow, and  a floor comes off and a man drowns in the water. It's an indirect expression, so I feel the weirdness more. And in the middle of this movie, the monster appears. It is a big worm that attacks people. What is the natural shape of the monster? 

This is a famous story of monster B-movie. This is great. I think it's the best monster B-movie.

Sharktopus

"Sharktopus" is a movie in the monster panic genre. The film was directed by Declan O'Brien, and starrs Sara Malakul Lane in the leading role. The movie was released in 2010.

 

The United States Navy asks a team called "Blue Water" to capture a creature. The creature has the lower body of an octopus and the upper body of a shark. This is Sharktopus. Sharktopus is a biological weapon that was created thrugh genetic engineering by the United States Navy. Sharktopus can move fast also in the sea and on the ground. And it has 8 legs and sharp teeth. They are heinous weapons when Sharktopus attacks people.

 

As can be understood from the title, this is a straight monster panic genre movie. As the creature, Sharktopus appears frenquently, I can watch this movie without boredom. It has a good tempo. In addition, the Sharktopus' CG model is perfect. It is able to express the violece of sharks and the eerie  movement of an octopus.

 

"Sharktopus" is a great movie. It is the king of B-movies. I recommend this movie for B-movie beginners.

 

Ghost Shark

"Ghost shark" is in the monster panic genre. The film was directed by Griff Furst, and staries Mackenzie Rothman in the leading role. The movie was released in 2014.

One night, the bounty hunters are fishing. They catch the fish of a mercenary, but the fish is eaten by a shark, so the bounty hunters are very angry. They beat the shark, and the shark runs away from the bounty hunters. But the shark dies because it was weak. Amazingly, the shark is revived and becomes a ghost. The ghost shark eats the bounty hunters, however its anger doesn't settle. Moreover the ghost shark marches into the town.

The unique point of this movie is the ghost shark. The ghost shark is a shark, so because it's a ghost it has no substance. It is very interesting. The ghost shark appears in various locations. For example, it apears in water pipes, water buckets and water servers. In other words, the ghost shark can appear wherever there is water. For that reason, it has a different appeal point from other shark B-movies.

My favorite scene in this movie is when the ghost shark attacks by blending into the rain. I was very impressed seeing this scene. I never thought I would be so impressed by a B-movie. I think the setting of ghosts is used well.

"Ghost shark" is very intersting. It is a wonderful point to mix ghosts and sharks. Please see "Ghost Shark "

Beach Shark

This blog is about B-movies. "Beach Shark" is in the monster panic genre. The film was directed by Mark Atkins, and stars Corin Nemec in the leading role. The movie was released in 2011.

Nomally the shark swims in the water, but in this movie, sharks can swim on the ground. The stage is a quiet island, “ White Sand”  The son of the mayor is trying to hold a music festival for town revitalization on the island,  but suddenly  many sharks appear on the island.

This movie’s good point is the sharks. There are good  graphics of sharks. The sharks are full of originality, and they move very well. It is also good that many sharks appear. It is cool, isn’t it?

 

This movie characters are interesting. The son of the mayor, two police, researcher of sharks and hunter of shark are acting selfishly. In particular, the son of the mayor is. But eventually, they start moving towards one goal.

"Beach shark" is a good movie for a B-movie. Recently, there are many B-movies with  sharks. I think this movie is great among them. Please see “Beach shark”.

Sharknado

I’m going to write about my favorite movies. Sharknado is one of them. The name Sharknado derives from sharks and tornado. It is a B-movie and in the science fiction genre. The film was directed by Anthony C. Ferrante, starried John Heard in the leading role. The movie was released on July 11, 2013.

The movie is set in California in summer. The tornado “Debit” has occured in the Gulf of Mexico. and in California, A school of sharks attack. Further the tornado mixes with the school of sharks and becomes Sharknado. The main character runs away from Sharknado, but Sharknado keeps getting stronger, and the main character can’t run away from it.
 

I think this movie has two charm points. First, the sharks are interesting. This movie’s sharks fly high in the sky. And it is not possible to defeat the big sharks with a gun. Besides, the sharks can break through buildings made of concrete. This movie’s sharks are very strong.

 

The second charm point is weapons. A gun can’t defeat the big sharks. So what kind of weapon can defeat the sharks?  It is better to use a chair than a gun. The main character defeats the shark by hitting it with a chair,.It is very incredible. However, the strongest weapon is a chainsaw. If you have a chainsaw, it is easy to defeat sharks.

 

These are the charm points of this movie. If you see this movie, you can spend a very enjoyable two hours.
